An in-person Public Hearing was held Thursday, July 22, 2021 from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Island Rec Center (20 Wilborn Road, Hilton Head Island). The public was invited to join us from 2:00 to 6:00 pm to view project materials & ask questions. The formal verbal comment session began at 6:00 pm with the close of the open house. Those who would have liked to participate in the verbal comment session were required to sign-up in advance to speak either online by July 21st or in-person prior to the session. Formal written comments could be made throughout the in-person meeting or online beginning July 7th through August 22, 2021.

The purpose of the meeting WAs to:

  • Provide an opportunity to discuss the Recommended Preferred Alternative for the US 278 Corridor Improvements project individually with representatives of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT);

  • Provide an update to the community on the project;

  • Share with the public the Environmental Assessment; and

  • Gather input from the public or any interested organization.

    Note: As presented at the Public Meeting in March 2022, the design was updated to allow for left turns from US 278 onto both Wild Horse Road and Spanish Wells Road and the intersection of Old Wild Horse will now be a right-in, right-out intersection.
